As CEO of UBS Wealth Management Americas (WMA), one of the world's largest wealth managers, and a member of the UBS AG Group Executive Board, Robert J. "Bob" McCann leads a team of nearly 7,000 financial advisors who manage $715 billion in client assets. Together they are building enduring client relationships and providing the resources and advice high net worth investors need to confidently move forward in a changing global economy.
Since joining UBS in October 2009, Bob has worked toward his vision of providing innovative and cutting-edge solutions for clients and shareholders. In his brief tenure, Bob has streamlined the business, returning it to profitability, while promoting an advisor-centric, client-focused culture, as well as bringing in and developing outstanding talent. He continually seeks to address investors' desire for wealth preservation and relevant investment guidance.
Promoting economic recovery
In response to investors' deep concerns about America's long-term economic growth, Bob implemented a key firm initiative called Revitalizing America, which comprises speaking engagements and programs aimed at shaping common ground and discussing ways to reignite the U.S. economy. These high-profile events featuring former U.S. presidents and other political and business luminaries are making their way across the country—from New York to Dallas to Los Angeles—creating landmark opportunities for clients to access timely perspectives. Other events are planned for later in 2011 and 2012.
Boosting small business
Most recently, he and President Bill Clinton (through the Clinton Economic Opportunity Initiative, or CEO) established the CEO-UBS Small Business Advisory Program, a philanthropic partnership aimed at providing small business owners in underserved communities with the tools necessary to support business expansion through a series of financial advisory mentorship programs. By helping entrepreneurs to grow their businesses, CEO aims to help create jobs, generate wealth and promote lasting economic development. The partnership is under way with a six-month pilot in the New York metropolitan area and there are plans to expand to other cities in 2012.
Prior to joining UBS, Bob had a 26-year career at Merrill Lynch, during which he held a variety of leadership positions throughout the firm, including Vice Chairman of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., President of Global Wealth Management, Head of Global Securities Research and Economics, Chief Operating Officer of Global Markets & Investment Banking, and Head of Global Equity Trading & Markets.
Making a difference
Bob is committed to helping clients achieve financial "success" although he personally is guided by an even broader definition of the word. To him, "A successful life is not defined by the title on your business card. It is measured by the impact you have on the lives that you touch." Bob's passion for education and his many charitable pursuits have made a big difference in the lives of many. He sits on the boards of a number of organizations that seek to educate and develop young talent, including:
- Bethany College, his alma mater. Bob established the McCann Learning Center and the McCann Family Student Investment Fund, which provide students with the respective opportunities to enrich their learning skills and manage investments in the real-world financial markets.
- American Ireland Fund, a charitable network of the Irish diaspora dedicated to supporting peace, reconciliation, culture, education and community development in Ireland. The year Bob was honored by AIF in New York, the dinner raised a record $4.1 million, which funded the production of 26 Sesame Street episodes for Irish children and also helped build an integrated preschool in Northern Ireland.
- No Greater Sacrifice, an organization that funds the education of children of military personnel who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty.
