In Memoriam

Jim was the consummate professional known for his hard work in and out of the office, his infectious personality and his quick wit. He spent most of his formative years in the Carolinas and was a true southern gentleman.  After finishing his formal education, he moved to West Palm Beach in 1983 where he started a long, successful career in the financial services industry. His skills as an advisor were in constant demand from both clients and many financial firms. Jim was currently at the pinnacle of his career while working as a Managing Director and Portfolio Manager here at UBS. He began his career at J.B. Hanauer, followed by tenures at Smith Barney and Merrill Lynch. Jim was consistently a top producer in the industry and always well respected by clients and colleagues. In addition to his many other awards, Jim was named a Barron's Top Advisor for the last nine years. To insure his legacy, Jim brought his son, Trey, into the business in 2012 and formed our team, Focus Wealth Management, with Peter Foley in 2016.

His intense work ethic in his profession and his hobbies is something we could all learn from. Even at the peak of his career, Jim remained humble and still cut his own grass every Saturday. While staying devoted to his clients and maintaining his immaculate yard, Jim found time for his greatest hobby – photography. He decided to pick up a professional camera for the first time 20 years ago and 6 months later had a photo on the cover of National Wildlife Federation Magazine. He traveled the world chasing some of God’s most unique and dangerous animals and captured some incredible images. His trips took him to Africa, Asia and even Antarctica in search of the perfect shot of lions, bears, penguins, and most recently, great white sharks. After years of focus on wildlife Jim turned his attention to his new subject, the New England Patriots. For the last 10 years he has been to almost every game – home or away –  including a few Super Bowls. In total, his photographs were featured in over 200 publications and he had over 17,000 images on the Associated Press’s website. While most would consider his photography a successful career, it was just Jim’s fun weekend job.

There are few who will live a more fulfilled and rewarding life. We will always miss him and strive to uphold his legacy by following his simple words to live by – work hard and be nice.

Background and experience
Originally from the Carolinas, Trey moved to South Florida after earning his undergraduate degree and MBA from Appalachian State University in 2012. That same year he was able to begin his career at UBS in Palm Beach Gardens. Trey was quickly recognized as a leader among his peers. He was selected to attend the New Financial Advisor Leaders Forum in 2013. In 2017, Trey was selected to participate in an advanced professional program at UBS to build upon his wealth management knowledge and earned his UBS Wealth Advisor designation.

In 2018, after the loss of our team’s founder and Trey’s father, Jim Mahoney, Trey took on the responsibility of leading Focus Wealth Management with his partner Peter Foley. Under Jim’s tutelage, Trey was developed by one of the best. He learned Jim’s process to managing tailored portfolios and the importance of developing strong relationships with our clients so that he can serve them better. Working with Peter, Trey spends much of his time managing portfolios and holds a Portfolio Manager designation in our discretionary portfolio program. He works tirelessly to ensure that our clients’ needs and expectations are met and exceeded.

His hard work and dedication to clients has been recognized by his peers, his firm, and the industry. In 2019, Trey was named by Forbes as one of the “Top 250 Next-Gen Advisors”. Additionally, UBS named him a “Top 35 Under 35” Advisor for 2019.

Outside of UBS
Trey has a number of interests, but brings a camera along for all of them. He enjoys paddle boarding, freediving, and drone photography. He accompanied Jim on numerous trips around the world to photograph Africa’s big cats, brown bears in Alaska and most recently, great white sharks in Mexico. Trey is also active in the community. Over the last three years he has participated in "The Crossing for a Cure" where he paddle boarded more than 80 miles, over 15 hours, from Bimini back to Florida in an effort to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.

Background and experience
Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Peter began his career attending and graduating from Chase Manhattan Bank’s prestigious Management Development program, where he held positions in credit risk management, marketing, and private bank lending.

Peter later moved his business to the Merrill Lynch Miami office where he led the Foley Group, a six person team that primarily advised business owner clients on traditional asset management, wealth transfer techniques, corporate leverage structures and retirement planning. The Miami office was named Merrill Lynch’s top office after Peter assumed the role of Producing Branch Manager.

In 2005 he was asked to attend and ultimately passed Merrill Lynch’s legendary Assessment Center for Leadership where he earned a full time leadership position as the Associate Director of the Midwest Private Bank and Investment Group in Chicago. Recognizing Peter’s talents, he was quickly promoted to Complex Director for the Northern Florida Market of Merrill Lynch and then to the Boca Tropics Complex where he was consistently one of the top directors in the firm and number one in 2011.

In 2013 Peter transitioned to UBS to run the Florida East Complex, which was comprised of 153 advisors with over $150 million in revenue and nearly $20 billion dollars in assets where he was, once again, one of the top directors in the firm.

After coaching and developing some of Florida’s top financial advisors, Peter felt compelled to again help clients work towards their financial goals. To that end, Peter partnered with Jim Mahoney and created Focus Wealth Management. Peter’s current role on the team includes financial planning, operational efficiencies and team management oversight, as well as coordination of lending and client advisors. Having run a significant business, his operational experience is a valued addition to their entrepreneurial clients.

Outside of UBS
Peter and his wife Andrea have two children, Peter III and Audrey. He gives back to the community through involvement that includes past board membership and Campaign Chair for the United Way, The Red Cross, The Community Health Center of Palm Beach and The Atlantic Chamber Orchestra. Although Peter’s most fulfilling hobby is supporting his two children in their efforts to remain nationally ranked sailors, he also finds time to pursue his personal passions of golf, fishing, diving and boating.

Thomas began his professional career as a wholesale sales representative for S. Abraham and Sons. There, he became fluent in business logistics and excellent client service. When presented, Thomas couldn’t pass up the opportunity to provide one family with holistic property management. Thomas became the family’s Estate Manager and eventually transitioned from being a caretaker to a caregiver as the family went through the natural life cycle. With a passion for creating and cultivating very deep and personal relationships, Thomas repeated this transition on a few more occasions as various families needed his help in caring for their possessions and then eventually for them.

In 2009 Thomas, an avid photographer and adventure traveler, met Jim Mahoney on a trip to Northern Canada to photograph polar bears. They became friends and travelled together over the next few years. Jim, recognizing Thomas’ dedication to excellent client service, decided to bring Thomas onto the team to increase the service level of his team and provide the expertise he had acquired in helping families manage their vast resources and then in helping navigate their life cycles.

Thomas uses his professional logistics background by coordinating our significant client meetings, events and initiatives that are part of our client service model. Consistent with Focus Wealth Management’s mission of providing extraordinary service, Thomas is available to support our clients.
