Your business

Guidance throughout your business life cycle

Whether you are planning to exit now or simply gauging your readiness, a business transition is a complex process, entailing personal, financial and family concerns. Knowing who to work with can make all the difference. Our team offers fiduciary guidance and consultative advice that empowers you to make educated decisions regarding your personal finances, your business, and your legacy.

“We’ll help you make confident business transition decisions by coordinating our extensive UBS resources and network of professionals.”

The value of your business

If you’re like most entrepreneurs, a substantial portion of your family wealth is invested in your business. This comes with its own unique challenges. Through financial planning and risk management strategies, we can help you address these challenges at each stage of your business maturity. When you are ready to transition, we will help you do so with confidence on your own terms and schedule.

Growth strategies

  • Expanding. We will help you understand opportunities to grow and expand your business by looking at your entire financial picture. This includes tax planning strategies, retirement plans, cash management, private capital sourcing, investments and custom lending solutions such as securities-backed lending, mortgages and tailored financing.
  • Later stages. To get your business market-ready, you will need to take action several years in advance of an exit to de-risk the business and drive enterprise value. We can introduce you to an experienced investment banking partner who will help you prepare your business for sale and help maximize its value through a competitive bidding process.

Monetize your business

  • Assessing your readiness. When your business is perceived as a solid opportunity, it may create a competitive buyer environment, increase value, improve negotiation and help minimize time to close. Understanding the current value of your business, its attractiveness to a potential buyer and your own readiness to exit are essential steps in the transition process.
  • Tax strategies. Understanding the tax consequences of an exit and the potential impact on your financial plan is an integral piece of the exit planning process. In coordination with your CPA and estate attorney, we can help you develop tax- efficient strategies for exiting your business.

Selling or transitioning your business

  • Our process incorporates detailed cash flow modeling to clearly illustrate and compare the economic benefits and tax-efficiency of various internal and external exit options. Whether considering a sale to a strategic or financial buyer, utilizing a dividend recap, or transitioning your business internally through a management buyout, sale to an ESOP, or an inter-family transfer, we will coordinate with other professional advisors to assist you in executing your chosen business transition plan.

Plan for life post-exit

  • Ready for what’s next. We can help you develop a post-sale transition plan to ensure you are personally and financially ready for the next chapter in your life. We will help you transition from receiving a K-1 distribution or salary to living comfortably off your investment income. We’ll work with you in a one-on-one relationship to design and execute customized investment strategies based on your plan.
  • Legacy and estate planning strategies. We have the experience and the network to help with protecting your assets, reducing estate tax exposure, and transitioning wealth to future generations.

Portfolio construction. Our team is grounded in the best practices of prudent asset allocation and risk management. We build custom investment strategies based on a disciplined due-diligence process for identifying the most efficient and risk-conscious ways to construct your portfolio to conform to your investment objectives.

  • Targeted returns. We look at your assets and liabilities, family dynamics and cash flow needs to help determine a rate of return that aligns with your goals.
  • Cash flow. We allocate stable, liquid assets to a portion of your portfolio to help mitigate inevitable market drawdowns.

Portfolio management. The foundation of our investment recommendations rests upon the classic Graham & Dodd tools for security analysis including debt to equity ratios, cash flows and a multitude of other tools. In addition to offering a full suite of traditional investments, our open architecture platform provides clients with exclusive access to top money managers and alternative investments. With analysts in 50 different countries, our research presents a truly global perspective.
