A focus on intrinsic value investing

As part of the Portfolio Management Program (PMP), which offers personalized, discretionary investment management, Dan has completed extensive training to help assist our clients with the investment process. This includes evaluating needs and objectives, determining the right investment strategy, managing assets, measuring performance, and evaluating investment results.

Our value investment approach
At the Alfa Group, we are fundamentally value investors—we assess the market to identify shares of select companies that we believe are undervalued and appear to trade for less than their intrinsic value; however, our assessment of companies doesn't end there. We continue our comprehensive evaluation and analysis of company balance sheets and performance. It's this rigorous due diligence that distinguishes The Alfa Group. We seek to own shares of companies that are trading at substantial discounts to their intrinsic value based on discounted cash flow analysis. We believe that the greater the discount, the greater the potential for investment return.

Objective and Strategies
The Global Macro portfolio seeks to produce returns that are competitive with the MSCI All Country World Index. The portfolio is largely comprised of high quality stocks and select ETF's. The strategy is long-only in nature and avoids making market timing calls, however, it will generally own large cash or treasury positions from time to time as market conditions warrant.

The Taxable/Tax free Bond Portfolio seeks to produce returns that exceed the Barclays Aggregate Bond Index.

The Portfolio is generally comprised of select ETF’s representing High Yield bonds, Emerging Market Debt, Preferred stock, and a portion in high quality stocks which historically have higher dividends. Individual treasury, corporate and municipal bonds can be utilized as well.

The strategy also utilizes option strategies that seek to generate income or manage risk. The strategy seeks to achieve tax-efficiency through tax loss harvesting and minimal annual turnover.

Our research
We aim to only invest in companies that we can thoroughly research and understand. We've found that certain businesses do not lend themselves to fundamental analysis, either because of complexity or opacity. We believe that the evaluation and analysis we do on a company enables us to find the appropriate investment for the portfolio.

Portfolio selection

  • While attractive valuation is very important to our strategy, it is not the only thing we seek in an investment.
  • We seek businesses that we believe may generate attractive returns on their invested capital
  • We are looking for reasonable debt levels, positive growth, attractive margins, competent management, and the ability to manage all phases of the business cycle.
  • We seek a low turnover approach and actively manage tax loss selling throughout the year.
